Things get a bit crazy for many of us during the month of September. For some of us it’s back to school, for some of us it’s back to in-person work settings, for all of us it’s making decisions about how to respond to the pandemic in a season where, as Phil Christman put it, “every one is their own actuary.” Good times! Hopefully, having a bit of a preview of what’s happening at church will provide a comforting rhythm in the midst of the chaos.
Following Joy’s talk at the end of August about grace, that is the theme that is going to structure many of our gatherings through the month of September, not unlike a leitmotif in a Strauss opera or an Easter Egg in a Marvel movie. Watch for it!

The first Sunday of the month is our “Brunch™” Sunday. Why did we add an illegitimate trademark to “Brunch”? Well, we don’t have a good reason beyond that it seemed sort of funny at the time.
This week we will be gathering at Jay and Marg’s place at 11am. (Email for address). Although the brunch meal is going to be more of a potluck going forward, this time you can just plan to bring yourselves. If possible, let us know ahead of time that you are coming so we can have numbers and allergies.
After brunch, for those who are interested, we will be trying out something that we’ve tentatively called “makerspace worship”. Basically, think of it as a kind of spiritually oriented coffee house concert that you can sing along with or find other ways to orient your heart and mind to God. We will kick this time off with communion.

For those who are interested, Vision Ministries Canada will be holding a prayer time to be held over Zoom on Saturday, September 11 at 7pm. Email Jeff if you would like to be sent the Zoom link.

This Sunday is technically our “Let’s Try This!” Sunday, where we borrow traditions from other Christian faith groups through the centuries. This week we will be bending the definitions a bit by taking part in Mount Carmel Bible College’s annual Elijah Run & Community BBQ, which several other churches in the Edmonton area also take part in.
Participation in this event can take the form of walking, running, or just cheering people on, and is also an opportunity to welcome the new students to their year of Bible College and to support Carmel’s fundraising efforts. More information on this is forthcoming; in the meantime, check out Mount Carmel’s website. Registration starts at 3:30pm; BBQ is at 5:30pm.
If you are interested in helping with set up or clean up, please get in touch with Jay. Register online to walk or run.

Week three is the week that we affectionately (and confusingly) call “What is This?” Sunday.
This month, we will be discussing a movie. In fact, we will be discussing Joy’s favourite thoughtful movie in honour of her birthday: the 2007 epic fantasy disaster comedy film, Evan Almighty. (It’s possible that this isn’t Joy’s favourite thoughtful movie, but that she chose it because it would be kid-friendly. We shall see!)

The movie is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
On Sunday, September 19 at 1pm, we’ll be having a conversation about the movie!
N.B.: This week is Zoom-friendly, so if you would like to join via Zoom, sign up to join the mailing list.

Our fourth Sunday of the month is “Word!” Sunday, where we listen to someone teach from the Bible about a topic that will shape the next month of Sundays. This month, Ruth will be preaching. Here’s what she says about the topic:
“The plan for this week is to talk about the grace we show to others in light of God’s grace to us. Bring paper and pens for some potential activities and some sort of bread and drink for communion :)”
This week will be happening on Zoom; if you are interested in joining, email us and we can send you the link.
As more details unfold about each week, including locations, we’ll update this page. If you would like to be on the mailing list, send an email to info@ajesuscommunity.ca.
