October is one of my favourite months. The air gets nice and crisp. The colours are exactly the right mix of beauty and melancholy. And the strange concoction of unnatural flavours known as pumpkin spice latte steps in to fill whatever autumnal gap remains within one’s overall sensory field. Here’s what is planned for the Sundays in October at A Jesus Community…
Ruth wrapped up the month of September talking about the grace we’re called to show to others (building off of Joy’s earlier talk about the grace we receive from God). The first few Sundays of October will continue to develop that theme.
We are going to be switching up the order of our Sundays a bit this month to accommodate the second week being Thanksgiving (and hence a perfect opportunity to do a Brunch Sunday). We’re also going to be continuing to navigate what an appropriate response to the COVID-19 pandemic might be for a small church just starting off. Mostly, we’ll be meeting via Zoom: stay tuned for any updates on this. If you would like to join us, email us for the Zoom link.

We will be kicking off the month with a “Borrow!” Sunday — essentially a Sunday event where we borrow from church traditions across space and time (and sometimes much, much closer to home). We’re going to be trying out a variation on an Open Brethren “Remembrance Service.” There will be some instructions given at the beginning, so don’t worry if you’ve never been part of one before! Individual Brethren assemblies differ in terms of the constraints around who can participate and how. At A Jesus Community, though, everyone is welcome to participate equally.
We are planning to hold this outside, in-person at 1pm. Email info@ajesuscommunity.ca for the address. If weather doesn’t cooperate we will be meeting on Zoom.

Due to poor weather, we ended up not doing the planned Thanksgiving Tailgate we had originally planned, and instead had a time of worship and reflection via Zoom. For anyone interested, we sent out a form for tracking what we’re thankful for. We’ll be pulling together the anonymous entries in the next few weeks.

COVID continues to make things a bit complicated in terms of big events, so our planned Art Event is going to be delayed. Instead, we will be holding our first-ever Quarterly AGM®! The joke with this name, of course, is that you can’t have a quarterly AGM (since the “A” stands for “annual”). We’re going to try, though, and say the “A” stands for “awesome” instead.
What is a Quarterly AGM®? Basically, it will be opportunity for us to talk about the past few months of this experiment in Jesus community: what’s been working, what hasn’t, and where things might go in the coming months. We will be meeting at Mount Carmel Bible College at 11am. Please note that all in-person COVID-19 restrictions, including masking and physical distancing, will be in place.
For those who are interested, Zoom is also still an option. Email Jeff for more info.

The fourth Sunday this month will be another “Word!” Sunday. Along with time for discussion, Jay will be speaking this week. Jay’s topic is going to be “Forgiveness.”
As with last week, we will be meeting at Mount Carmel Bible College at 11am. Please note that all in-person COVID-19 restrictions, including masking and physical distancing, will be in place.
For those who are interested, Zoom is also still an option. Email Jeff for more info.

The last Sunday, which is a fifth Sunday, is a Sabbatical Sunday. This means that it’s really an open week for everyone. Take the time to be with your family. Invite someone over for a meal (with proper COVID precautions in place of course!) Spend time in nature with God. Or maybe just take a nap! (Jesus was a fan of naps).
As more details unfold about each week, including locations, we’ll update this page. If you would like to be on the mailing list or to get the Zoom link, send an email to info@ajesuscommunity.ca.
