What’s Happening in April 2022

T.S. Eliot may have said that April was the cruellest month, but maybe he was being ironic given that it starts off with April Fools’ Day. The online April Fools’ Day pranks got me once again: this time, it was an article claiming that Ontario was going to be mandating a four-day work week. Too good to be true, sadly!

Since I’m posting this a day late, I sadly can’t contribute to the deceit/fun, so can affirm only that the following descriptions of “what’s happening” are accurate to the best of our knowledge (at least until we update them to say otherwise).

April 3, 2022 @ 11am

Sunday we will be doing a Hymn Sing and taking communion together. C.S. Lewis may have famously called hymns “fifth-rate poems set to sixth-rate music,” but if you grew up singing them, you’ll know that they can stick in your head like a Coldplay song. (I wonder if Coldplay would ever do an album of hymns?).

We’ll be meeting at Mount Carmel at 11am as usual (and via Zoom).

April 10, 2022 @ 11am

To celebrate Palm Sunday, Joy will be running a Palm Sunday School event. This is going to be very kid-friendly (whether literal kids or the young of heart). More details coming soon! (As usual, we’ll be meeting at Carmel.)

Good Friday | April 15, 2022 @ 6:30pm

1973. Rock. Gospel. Cosplay. What’s better than reflecting on Good Friday than to watch Andrew Lloyd Webber’s monumental musical, Jesus Christ Superstar? Doing it with some friends while dressed in costumes! Maybe Judas’s red unitard is what you’re aiming for. Or white bell-bottoms? Or maybe everyone will just wear whatever the priests have got on their heads.

For this year’s annual Jesus Christ Superstar Good Friday event, we are going to be meeting at Mount Carmel Bible College at 6:30pm.

Can’t think of a good costume? Dress up as N.T. Wright, a New Testament scholar, who talks about the first time he encountered the musical:

I had known Jesus all my life; better still, perhaps, to say that he had known me. […] But as my bride and I moved in to our basement apartment, I listened to Superstar. […] It was as though all the energy of the popular culture of the 1960s had suddenly swung around, away from its preoccupation with sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll, and was looking again at the Jesus it had almost forgotten. There was a sense of, “Oh, you’re still there, are you? Where do you fit? What was it all about anyway?”

(N.B. No dressing up is required for this event! If the threat of cosplay is exactly that — i.e., a threat — to you, then by all means just come as you are!)

Multi-Church Easter Sunday Celebration | April 17, 2022 @ 10:30am (Coffee starts at 10am)

To celebrate Easter this year in a big way, we will be gathering with two of our sister churches, Millcreek Christian Fellowship and Southview Christian Fellowship, at Mount Carmel.

The service will get started around 10:30am, but there will be coffee and time to catch up with people starting at 10am. At 11:30am, there will be an Easter Egg hunt. (While the theology of Easter Eggs may be up for debate, the theology of fun shouldn’t be!)

More details are forthcoming, but we are very excited to worship with our brothers and sisters on one of the most significant dates in the Church Year.

April 24, 2022 @ 11am

For Word Sunday this month, we will be having a discussion about some of the topics raised in the Easter Sunday talk: what does meeting Jesus at home look like? We will be meeting at Mount Carmel as per usual and on Zoom.

As more details unfold about each week, we’ll keep updating this page. Please note that our in-person events will follow any applicable guidelines for COVID-19. Currently, as masks are not legislated, we would welcome people to do what they are most comfortable doing (either wearing a mask or not) with love and consideration for others. If you are interested in joining via Zoom on one of the weeks where this is available, send an email to Jeff at info@peacecommunity.ca.
